Overview

The best and brightest apprentices will be attracted by the strong technology focus of this fire protection apprenticeship program. Participants will gain skills in the use of new industry construction technologies and equipment with support from leading manufacturers and trainers. This qualification provides competencies in installing, testing and maintaining fire protection systems.

In addition to apprenticeship training which is specifically tailored for the commercial fire protection sector, eligible employers and apprentices will receive a range of additional benefits. The most significant of these is the reimbursement to employers for the additional four weeks of training time for apprentices.

Once enrolled, eligible apprentices will receive:

Entry Requirements

Students must be employed as an apprentice in the relevant industry and have a signed up through an Australian Apprenticeship Centre, stating The Service Trades College Australia as the Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).

The additional benefits provided in the apprenticeship training program are funded by BERT Training Queensland, thanks to the Plumbers Union Queensland and the Master Plumbers Association’s Major’s Group.

Participation in this apprenticeship is via an Expression of Interest and is only available to eligible employers and their apprentices.

If you are not eligible for participation in the apprenticeship program, you can still enrol your apprentice at the College and undertake the standard curriculum delivery, although BERT Training Queensland will not fund any additional benefits for your trainee.

Face to Face Learning

On Campus learning allows you to learn in a traditional classroom environment. This form of learning gives you the opportunity to bounce ideas off your facilitator and others within your learning group.

Training is delivered at our state of the art Salisbury Campus, South Brisbane. The Campus provides simulated work environments that provide dynamic and practical learning in a safe setting. Our knowledgeable trainers utilise the latest industry methods and equipment to prepare specialists for the future.

Block Release

Block release is a form of scheduled learning structure to support learners, employers and industry, to reinforce individual development. Block training typically consists of College attendance three times a year for two weeks each time Monday to Friday (7am –3pm). At apprenticeship commencement an individual training plan is developed for each apprentice. The duration of attendance may vary depending on the stage and the units of competency specified in the apprentices individual training plan.

Resources required

Personal protective equipment supplied by trainee:

  • cotton drill shirt and cotton drill trousers
  • protective footwear steel capped (AS/NZ 2210)

Personal protective equipment supplied by College:

  • clear safety glasses or clip-ons, if prescription glasses are normally worn (AS/NZ 1336 or 1337)
  • ear protection – ear muffs or plugs (AS/NZ 1269 or 1270)

Additional mandatory safety equipment required for welding classes:

  • long sleeve cotton drill shirts and long cotton drill pants, or overalls (no nylon)
  • oxy welding goggles
  • drop down arc welding face shield
  • gauntlet leather welding gloves

Students failing to meet these minimum standards of dress will not be permitted entry in to practical classes.


Important Information for Year 12 graduates:

You are eligible for fee-free training for this course if you:

  • have completed Year 12 in Queensland and hold a Senior Statement issued by the Queensland Studies Authority or equivalent

  • within 12 months of completing Year 12 in Queensland enrol and start study within 12 months of completing Year 12 in Queensland in 2013 or 2014 (e.g. if you graduated in 2014, you must enrol before the end of the 2015)

  • live permanently in Queensland

Cost

Queensland:

Eligible apprentices and trainees that meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a student contribution fee of $1.60 per nominal hour. As a provider of Future Skills WA training, eligible apprentices and trainees will be charged a student contribution fee of $3.25 per nominal hour. Outcomes

On successful completion of this course you will receive CPC32813 – Certificate III in Fire Protection qualification. You will meet the qualifications required for Queensland Government licences in Fire Protection (Commercial and Industrial), Fire Protection (Hydrants and Hose Reels), Fire Pumps, Fire Protection (Special Hazard Suppression Systems) and EAHL 2/3 Restricted Water Plumbers Fire Protection.

The combination of industry specific trade training, important life skills and leading-edge training facilities will add substantial value to this apprenticeship program.


How to Enrol

If you are already employed as an apprentice or trainee, let your employer know that you want The Service Trades College Australia to be your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO). Contact an Australian Apprenticeships Centre to organise your training contract and they will contact the College.

Credit Transfer (CT) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) are two ways that a student may obtain credit towards their Certificate and program of study.

CREDIT TRANSFER

Credit Transfer is an administrative process, by which a training provider recognizes and accepts Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by another Registered Training Organization (RTO).

It allows a student to obtain credit for already, successfully completed formal training which is equivalent to a component in a current program the student is enrolled in. The student may have been formally trained by the RTO they are currently enrolled with, or by another RTO where the component is recognized as equivalent by the current RTO.

To be granted Credit Transfer the student must provide evidence of successful completion of the component, generally in the form of an academic transcript. Where Credit Transfer is granted, no training needs to take place in that component of the program. For the student it may reduce the time it takes to complete their program of study, however it does not necessarily reduce the cost.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)

RPL is the acknowledgement of a person’s skills and knowledge acquired through previous relevant training, work or life experience, which may be used to grant status or credit in a subject or a whole qualification. A student may apply for RPL upon enrolling with the training provider. The applicant must supply evidence to substantiate the claim for credit. This may be in a form of a portfolio with relevant documentation such as a resume, third party verifications, statutory declarations, photographic evidence of work performed, copies of current licenses and academic transcripts and competency conversations, etc. Evidence supplied in support of an RPL application must be assessed and mapped by the RTO for RPL to be granted. Unlike credit transfer the student has not previously been assessed as being competent and must go through an assessment process to be awarded RPL. RPL cannot be given for partial Units of Competency. Where a Not Yet Competent (NYC) decision is given by the assessor, a student may complete those particular units though Gap Training. The outcome of an RPL application is either the applicant is issued a qualification or Statement of Attainment for the units applied for or a partial Statement of Attainment with the recommendation that further gap training be undertaken for units deemed NYC. It’s important to note that an RTO is unable to issue a partial qualification. Only a full qualification can be issued once competence has been achieved for all units within the qualification.
